Well a couple weeks ago whenever I turned the steering wheel I heard a kind of rubbing noise (that’s the best way I can explain it but it is not easy to describe the sound accurately). Last week it got louder and then the next day I would experience resistance in the steering wheel when I attempted to turn.

So I knew I had to replace it. My independent mechanic checked what was available. There were re-manufactured units for $1200 and authentic Lexus units were $1898. I opted for the Lexus part and my mechanic said this was a good option because the whole assembly included all sensors and new tie rods. The job took him 4 hours and included a 4 wheel alignment.

I just thought I would post this for general info. (Needless to say, the pic is of the original rack!)

Good pricepoint for a new one vs rebuilt. Well done. How many miles and what do you think failed? Did the salted roads rust it?

Mileage is 164,217. Although the car has seen more than its fair share of salt (my wheels look like crap), it doesn't appear that was a factor. You can see that the rubber boots both look in good condition. My mechanic said it was the gears inside the unit.
