Manual Shifting
Is it just me or nature of the beast. Now Ive had cars that had similar gear shift control for up and down manual shifting.
So heres my deal. 2011 LS460 RWD. When wide open the I will shift early and the trans will run out to max. it also does what it wants at different throttle positions. On other cars it will up shift when you make it.
So nothing I can do about it or is that just the way it is?

The sport mode where you choose the gear does not actually choose a gear, it chooses a maximum gear it will go into. So if you early shift to 5 from 4, it will keep it in 4 until it (and only it) decides it's time to go to 5. Do not question it. It knows best. It will decide.

I agree with iwphatt66 about leaving in D for racing. I used to race a 79 Firebird and had the governor in the trans set to shift at 4600 RPM. So when I raced I would leave it in Drive and it would shift at that RPM every time on the spot. I have found that alot of Automatics will do this at the factory specified RPM so it makes sense.
My Hyundai Kona does too... they let me pick how much regenerative braking I want the car to do for me. When on the third setting it feels like engine braking on a manual transmission in a lower gear. With the instant torque and regenerative braking at the highest setting it's fun to whip the thing around, like a manual in just the right gear all the time.
I manually shift mine up and down (sometimes), just to exaggerate the exhaust sound so it sounds real nice. It shifts when I want it to. But neither is at full throttle. If I blip the throttle just right, at just the right timing, the downshifts are as smooth as buttuh. I don't always get it right, it's not always smooth, but better than shifting down and doing nothing with the throttle.
I know what you mean about throttling just before a downshift. I have done that in other cars Ive had. No exhaust sound for me. Still all factory quiet. I do like the sound of the intake air coming in at wide open. Kinda reminds me of the old 4 barrel carb days hearing that sound. I have noticed too that when I go to S mode while driving, it always go to 5th gear at maybe 40 mph or so. I try to have some fun with it but its not really possible. Too bad there isn't a tune for the transmission to get a little harder shifts and more on demand shifts.
