Has anyone replaced their ECU in the engine compartment?
I'm having the hard downshift issue along with another transmission issue that I hope is ECU related. I sent off my ECU to SIA to fix (I hope) but now I'm thinking, what if they come back and tell me it's unrepairable which they mention all over their communication. That led me to think, what do I do if it isn't repairable. Can I buy a used one of eBay and just replace it or does it need to be flashed/updated by a dealer? Is there anything that is specific to the car in the ECU?
It will be security coded to another car, you can bypass this/reprogram it by following a procedure when you install the replacement one.
Do you know of a post or something that explains how to reprogram it? I hope I don't have to replace mine but while I'm waiting for mine to be repaired I would like to get plan B in place.

I suggest asking SAI if they have any repaired and tested ECMs to sell. If you do use a different ECM it will have to be programmed for your car, security system, your keys, etc. This may require a dealer tech to perform or at a minimum someone skilled/experienced with Toyota techstream software to perform.
There are 3rd parties online selling used replacement ECMs - example link below. You may want to contact one of these companies also to see what they can provide.
In my case all that was needed was to put the car into diagnostic mode with the pin trick and leave it turned on (engine off) with the new ECU for about 45-60 min. Works as intended
Adding some pictures in case someone else comes across this thread.
I labeled the area that houses the ECU. You need to remove the cover above the ECU compartment by removing the plastic push pins with a plastic interior tool. You will need to remove the upper cover in order to get to the three screws that hold the cover on the ECU cover. Once the ECU cover is removed you just have to unplug the ECU and remove the two nuts holding it place. Both the screws and nuts are 10mm.
