Heater blowing Cold
2004 LX430, 130K Today after the car resting for a week, the heater did not engage at 4:30 am-26°. I drove 5 miles to pick up my mom, we went through a drive thru and I began to overheat. drove 1 mile and I was in the red. Pulled into a parking lot and heat kicked on. The temp came back down to normal and I finished my drive in the warm, about 3 miles. Does anyone one know a fix?

I recently purchased my LS 430 about a week ago and had the same problem. The coolant was really low. Evidently it evaporates over time in this vehicle, so it's something you need to check every few months. I topped it off and also replaced the thermostat because it was a cheap and easy change-out. After that I ran the car with the temp on HOT and fans at full for about 10 minutes to get rid of any air bubbles in the system. It still takes a few minutes to heat up, but 1000% better.

If the heater starts to blow colder air when the engine is at idle, but warmer temps when driving, the most likely issue is low coolant level. If the coolant level is low, there may be an air pocket. As the prior poster (sturo) said, just add coolant (antifreeze) and this should fix the issue.

You should also consider why you are losing coolant. In my '05 I had noticed a very slow loss of coolant from the reservoir over several months. I replaced my radiator cap, as was recommended in another recent post, about two months ago, with an OEM cap. Since then I have not lost any coolant whatsoever in about 1,000 miles of driving. I also monitor the coolant level every few hundred miles to confirm that remains the case.
