Default Damage to radar cruise

I have a 2001 LS430 UL with the 'radar' cruise control. Recently, it hasn't been working, and I've discovered that the sensor has been damaged by road debris. I was told by my tech at the indie Lexus/Toyota shop that to replace this, it must be taken to the dealer for replacement, because a special calibration machine is involved, in addition to $$$$. He also told me that it is possible to use the cruise without the radar, by toggling the cruise switch forward on the steering column. I haven't had any luck with it. Can someone enlighten me on this one?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am attaching the directions from my 2014 manual to switch from radar cruise to conventional cruise control. I think this set up has not changed for many years. Hope it helps.

The design has not changed. Here are pages from the Owner's Manual about the 2 modes...
