Default Just a curiosity............

We've passes 252k on our 2004 LS produced during 9 of 2003. No big problems and we love the car. If the transmission were to fail, what does it cost for the parts and labor to put a rebuilt unit in? Anyone ever face such an event? Chicago Jim

I would guess 800-1200 for a used tranny from japan and another 1000 for labor

aamco would charge upwards of 3500 or so to rebuild.

I know that my friend who owns a shop would buy a refurbished tranny, and it would probably be around $3500 labor all depends if they do book time or they due actual time all depends on the shop doing the swap.

You see so many high mileage 2006 LS430's (over 150 and around 200), that let's hope it never comes to that. imho for most cars, unlike the old days, transmission = done. OP has already reached 252k, and if no issues/noises, keep on truckin'...

I can think of a recent thread where it didn't seem that straightforward. Let's just assume $3k. There is a likelihood that $3k spent won't be the end of it, there can be gremlins to chase down, so is it worth it?

My indie recommended to my cousin, because he has a whine on a 2006 CR-V, just keep driving, and if the tranny fails, junk it. We could put a used one in for you, but you have to be ready to spend $2500+, and we have to be able to find a used one that we think is good, well under 100k, which isn't easy based on the year. So even an indie is not looking to rake someone over the coals, they want a good solution for the customer, which in the above is don't worry, keep driving, and junk the vehicle if the tranny fails. He even said based on experience working on other CR-V's, it should go much further than the 191k that it was at earlier this year...my .02

Can't really compare a 2006 Honda CR-V to an LS430, now can we John?
I think it's safe to assume the LS is a much better built vehicle that would last longer than the CR-V, so the prospect of spending money for a transmission repair on the LS (OP stated that there are no issues with the car, and they enjoy driving it) is much more palatable than spending money on the CR-V, IF the time comes to replace/repair the transmission.

Wouldn't you agree?

I would, but the numbers being thrown around are roughly $3k....would it be worth it to put that into a car that is approaching 300k, or maybe better to spend it on another car, even used....my point is maybe it's better not to worry about something that isn't happening. Wasn't there someone who recently did this, and had issues? That's a lot of money to spend and for things to be not right...for all we know there are no problems with OP's car and he blows through 300k with no issues...

p.s. look how my indie put yet another condition--if they are going to install a used tranny, they need to be able to find one they think is good. That isn't just going on eBay and buying one based on the description or a JDM...because if it fails, they eat the labor. You provide an eBay part, usually, you eat the labor...just a dicey situation...

Yes, there is a recent thread on one individual who had a transmission replaced, but IIR, there was some question about the condition of the transmission during shipping from Japan, which may or may not have contributed to the problems he was experiencing.
