I just think that car dealers are a little sneaky the way they present numbers, that's all. That's why they avoid discounts or "included" or "out the door," these terms are not in their favor. Saying it's this plus an unknown, that's for the house...my .02.

edit Just thought of an example, muffler shops say lifetime this and that. You know, the burger king guy touching everything and it turns to gold commercial, but he leaves the retriever alone. But it doesn't include labor, which is overstated. So a lifetime strut is basically costing the same under the warranty, as paying straight up without a lifetime warranty, whether you get 2, 3, 4, etc. It is designed such that there never is a break-even.
Gotcha, I guess I read over that too fast. I just grabbed my invoice from a indie shop:

T-belt kit w/ water pump w/ hyd tension: $424
Serpentine Belt: $67
Radiator cap: $25 (needed a new one)
Anti-freeze coolant: 2x$20 $40 total
BG Cooland flush kit $35
Supplies: $45

Labor: $595
Coolant Flush $85

Looking now it was closer to $1400 with other stuff, probably way overpaid but that gives you a estimate. I don't remember what they charge per hour, it may be around $90 for this shop.

I used a coupon at my Toyota dealership since the Lexus dealer was double the price.

I just had my 06 @68K done at an indie in NOVA outside of DC. Water pump/belt/tensioners ran me a grand. They said the belt was a little stiff but serviceable, but it was the pump and the tensioners that were shot. I feel a whole lot better now.

Our LS430s are currently 17 years old from 01. If your car is within this realm and you have not replaced the the timing belt and have not driven 180,000 miles... more than likely you have no issue with the notorious timing belt. It was made by Toyota to Last a minimum of 180,000 miles but more likely much much more. All the enthusiatic members of this forum might like to research LS430 failures due to Timing belt failures......Good luck.. Report back and tell us what you come up with . These cars are proven...No timing belt failures to report here.

Agree with you. I've read enough stories in here about barely worn belts. However, the engine is history if it breaks. Good you caught the water pump and tensioner problems. Peace of mind, preventative maintenance, whatever. Seems like a smart thing to do (at a good indy).

gmoney, not my intent to slam you at all but I call BS on the shop for telling you that the pump and tensioners were shot. I find it very hard to believe that those parts would be bad after only 68K miles, especially the tensioner. I think they said that to simply make you feel better about spending your hard earned $ at their place...

I would suspect that is for part and labor. Timing belt only...

I totally get that they would balk, but there is simply no way to trust the dealer because the used car sale is their bread and butter, they don't want to give up any margin here like they would on a new car....
John, why not take it one step further:

"You know, the subwoofer and the two front speakers are notorious for losing their foam surrounds. I'd like you to take off $2500 so I can get those replaced."

"While we're at it, I see that the LCA bushings are a little cracked and they need to go. Take off another $1000 please."

"Say, I had my heart set with this car having a set of Michelin Premier A/S's on them, why don't we take off $1000 too."

"This car never has had it's transmission fluid replaced. Let's subtract another $400."

"I've heard that Telescopic motors go out regularly on these cars, and the Tilt motor also. I think that's worth another $2000 off"

I noticed that the hood and trunk struts aren't very strong anymore. That's right, $500 off right now, por favor."

"Sooner or later the struts, brakes, hubs and suspension is just going to wear out. Deduct $2000 for that."

"You know what? Why don't you just sell me this here car for a dollar. In the long run it will just save you all of the expense in getting it fixed. What do you say???"

It's tricky because the dealer can tell you to pound sand and sell the car to the next customer who might not have a clue about the 90k service and just take it as is. If the car has been sitting on the lot for awhile, they may be more willing to bargain to get rid of it. I would rather have them come down on the price though rather than factor in the service, that way I can get it done by a mechanic of my choosing who will take the time to examine everything while it is apart and look for other things in there that might need replacing... like the crank seal.

I hear you, but my guy who I trust, showed me the parts - they were all wet/damp. It may have been overkill, but it was worth it to me.

Final Update: TB service was done, for a total cost of $995. Mechanic said it had never been changed, so it was the right call.

I purchased the car in Denver on Saturday, and drove it back to New Orleans over the weekend (1300 miles). Overall, it performed great. Average MPG was 26.

It does have a rear suspension squeak that shows up at low speed over broken pavement, so I'll have to figure out what that is.
