Water pump inspection
Approximately how much time and effort would be involved in pulling back or removing the cover enclosing the water pump to inspect it properly?

A LOT !
Several pieces have to come off and they are stacked so to get down where you need to see everything above has to come off first. Starting with the cam pulley covers down to the accessory tensioner and various other timing covers. Radiator hoses, fan bracket, small coolant bypass lines etc. You may be able to leave the crank pulley on along with the plastic timing cover directly behind it but if you really want to see the entire water pump everything short of the timing belt itself needs to be removed. Leaks at this level are pretty easy to spot as the red coolant creates a pink crud that's very easy to trace back to the source. I'd get underneath and do a careful thorough inspection with a good light before I started ripping the front of the engine apart...
