An engine for 500 bucks and 700 to install it is not going to happen and a good used corolla for 4-6$ to last for years is gonna be hard also. Any decent mechanic is gonna charge a 100 bucks an hour shipping the engine is gonna cost 500 bucks and in california nothing is cheap and there are alot of rip off artists so be careful. I know its hindsite in the future if a car is behaving erratically drive slow not 80 and pull off as soon as possible, not meaning to lecture stuff happens. Good luck

some engines for less than $2000, but most between 2-3,000. and I doubt you could get install for less than $1,500 plus incidentals. unless car is a desirable color combo it is time to move on. part it out to make some money, but putting almost $4,000 into a car that old is a bad idea. here there is a used 2003 ES300 with 135,000 miles for $4,600. a reliable car with some life left in it. I would look for something similar, good luck

Get multiple opinions from local mechanics. It has to be a plethora of good Toyota mechanics that way. There is an engine with 155k miles for a thousand bucks, free shipping. They are also taking best offers so you maybe can get it for around 800.

If it were me I would take it to my trusted local guy and grill them with many questions along the way.

Here is one in CA with 98k miles. So ya can drive look at the car it came out of and look the guy in the eye who is selling it maybe evn ask to call previous owner to discuss condition. It has a warrantee but I would think they do not cover cost to reinstall it. Shipping 250.00

From 03-04 I know there was a tranny change refresh of front rear end, a suspension tweak, headlight tweek Is the block and head the same though didn't it get more HP some how? The one with 98k miles might be an o3 motor. But ya have to prolly do t belt change and new parts hoses add up. Then lets say how many hours to install a motor?

I'd replace the engine. This car is one of the best cars money can buy. You'd be taking a step down driving most anything else. These engines are very robust and I'd not hesitate to get a used engine.

Go to www.car-part.com. This is a service where wreckers list their parts. You'd likely be able to find a low mileage engine...perhaps even one relatively local to you.

The LS is definitely a car worth saving.

I'd replace the engine myself.
$1500 and also do the clutch while it's accessible.

Engine is cooled 3 ways water, oil and ram air when car is in motion. Exactly what is the status of the car? Is it seized? What about transmission? When my boy's Subaru WRX STi engine failed due to broken oil pump pick up tube. He pulled over right away but engine was cooked. It cost 9K to have brand new replacement put in. Almost half of the cost was labor. Maybe there is a low mileage engine out of wreck some where. All wrecking yards are networked so they can search one for you.

That is a high price. I wouldn't pay anywhere near that for another engine. If you can find a engine for under $1,500 and a good cheap mechanic you can potentially do it under $3,000-3,500. I have seen the 3UZ for under $1,000 but they aren't as coomon of an engine around here.

I hope everything works out for you and that you can get the car fixed.

Sounds like you need to deal with a better repair shop...

On the 2nd multipoint inspection, the tech checked off that my clutch fluid was full.

"good cheap mechanic" Oxymoron? Is that when you have conflicting points? I want a great honest fair mechanic if it was me and expect to pay 90-100 bucks an hour and not have the hours inflated. Here is what you should think. What will U get for car as as is, what will you get with a well fixed LS with a 100k motor documented by a quallty repair garage with full receipts for resale. I would think unless U can get 4500$ for yur car a new engine for 4 k is the answer. iF ya get engine and shipping on e bay u have 6 months to pay
