Default 03 LS430 slipping in reverse

Just purchased an 03 LS430 and the trans seems to be slipping in reverse only on cold starts and is fine in drive.

Took it to the Toyota dealership and they recommended i change out the valve body.

Anyone else experience this particular issue on their 03 LS430? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance from the noob.

Did the car ever have a tranny flush before? Maybe it's due for you.

if it is a 5 speed with a dip stick check the level and condition of fluid on the stick. does it smell burnt or dark in color? if your car has the lifetime 6 speed transmission.....good luck. Was the car imported to Siapan from U.S.A. or is it Japanese market. this forum is almost all American market cars. the other market cars are often different from ours.

King I'm not sure on the tranny flush.

Jffgry the Lexus' that we have here on Saipan are normally shipped in from Guam since the dealers are one in the same. Atkins Kroll Guam and Atkins Kroll Saipan.

How can we tell if it's the lifetime model or the 5 speed model?

Your car is an '03, so it's definitely the 5 speed model tranny with a dip stick under the hood.

The 6 speed was introduced in the '04-'06 versions of the 430.

Whatever happened with your transmission? I'm having the same issue, been told by a Lexus dealer and two indy shops that it's "morning sickness"... transmission is slipping and needs to be replaced! Ugh

How many miles on the ticker? What's the service history of the tranny?

177k miles, 2002, I've done full 10-qt fluid exchanges every 30-40k miles, not just pan drain-and-fills.
