Default Remotes stopped working

My key remotes (to lock/unlock doors) suddenly stopped working. It was strange, one day they were working and the next they weren't.

At first I thought the battery in the remote had just run down. But when I tried the second remote (which previously had been working fine) it didn't do anything either.

I consulted the manual but didn't find anything useful on what the problem might be, now to reset the remotes, etc.

So now I have to lock/unlock everything manually using the physical key, and it kind of sucks.

Has anyone had this problem and were you able to fix it yourself without taking it into the dealership (I'm really trying to avoid that if possible!)

Thanks!

Not sure what year your car is - if you have smart key option there is a button on the dash that turns off the smart key system. Check to make sure that button is not set if you do have the smart key.

With the SmartAccess button set to "off," you should still be able to use the buttons on the key fob to lock & unlock the doors and trunk.

Can anyone elaborate on whether the smartkey sensors on the door handles are on the outside, or on the inside of the handle facing the door.

I recently put chrome door handle covers on my 01, now it fails to recognise my hand being there and unlocking the door'

The touch sensor on the outside door handle (for my 04 model) is on the side facing the door. I suspect the 01 model's design is the same...

Here's Inspection Procedure for the touch sensor circuit from the 04 repair manual, but I don't know for sure if the 01 is the same design.

'01 did not offer SmartAccess ... which is a proximity sensor in the key fob, door handle and ignition lockout ECU - introduced in '04.
