LS430Lexus

The sensor on my '02 UL w/120k was cracked when I acquired the car at around 50k 4+ years ago. I use the cruise only a couple of times a year and the manual override worked perfectly until this weekend. I would push the button to engage the cruise and hold it forward for about 10 seconds and it would work fine for about 5 minutes. Then I would get a red triangle light error message saying system failure.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions? Thank you in advance.

I have a 2002 ls 430 that is a cl, and my issue is that the lens of the radar has a crack in it. I tried searching for a post that mentions replacing or repairing the lens, but nothing so far. Oops, now that Gene01 mentioned the difference of laser and radar, I now mean my laser lens is cracked. Also, I now hate to admit that if I want to use my laser, I'll need to replace it. thanks for the info

i find that the radar cruise is to sensitive, you guys think that too.

Radar cruise was not introduced until 05. I have laser on my 04 and it works well. It does react when someone cuts in front of you but I like it on long trips.

Whether '02 came with radar or laser (the display says radar ready) the question is why the regular cruise control after bypassing the sensor cruise doesn't work.

By the way, if the sensor is cracked the entire sensor unit must be replaced. The glass itself can't be replaced.

Yes, it is unfortunate that Lexus used the term "radar" in the dash display for both laser and radar systems.
If you have the "glass eye" in the lower bumper, you have laser (DLCC).
If you have the plastic shield around the Lexus "L" in the center of the grille, you have radar (DRCC).
DRCC was not available until about Jan '05 build date (partway into the MY '05 cars).

Really? I have a 02 and thought I had radar cruise. I have yet to even try it though.

e60bmw - You can verify it by checking the front of your car, as described above.
The (millimeter wave) radar antenna is a flat box just behind the grille readily visible with the hood open.
The laser sensor is an optical device in the lower bumper.

For those of you having problems with broken glass on your adaptive radar cruise control .Mine is a 2002 Ls430. I picked up a small rock which broke the glass on my cruise control. The following was done for me. Had the front bumper removed to remove the cruise unit. made sure there was no moisture of any kind on the unit and let the moisture dry out for several days. I went to an industrial plastics shop and had them cut and fit some shatter proof plexiglass ( used in bulletproof windows) in place of the old glass. I put the module back together ( easy to do if you are gentle). Had the bumper re-installed and voila, worked like new. Because this type of plexiglass is so durable, I don't ever expect to have the same problem.

It would be very wise of people to install plexiglass or some other clear protection on or in front of the glass of the laser unit, otherwise you may eventually be in for a nice repair bill.

Good thought but you might want to check with the LEXUS dealer about that first. With 2 sheets of clear material instead of one, you might have to have the sensor re- calibrated at LEXUS. That can take 2 hours or more of labor. It also could be more prone to building moisture between the 2 clear sheets which could disable the system as it might think it is in a heavy rainstorm and automatically disengage. That is why I went in the direction that I did.
