Water pump broken?
Hello i recently purchased this water pump. Does this hairline crack matter and i should return it, or does this tiny crack not mater. Thanks everyone in advance!

I read somewhere that a new timing belt puts additional (or simply different) stress on the water pump which could cause it to start failing.
The A/C compressor is driven off the serpentine belt, so I don't think that would have any effect on the water pump.

I would not accept a new part with a hair line crack. Not only would I return it, I would not purchase another pump from that supplier. Run away.
Good to know thanks..but the lexus manager said no need to change the water pump when I was there for a timing belt change..its on my ES300 tho..so ya he said he would change only if it was leaking and from his experience he has never changed a water pump as a part of timing belt maintraince..however he did inspect the water pump and said was fine..hmmmm
What makes a water pump deteriorate the fastest is neglecting to change the coolant at the scheduled maintenance period. Usually, a good point is 3 years or 30k miles. The pump has a seal to prevent coolant from seeping into the bearing. Old coolant starts to break down the seal and can cause premature failure of the seal and, after some time, the bearing. There is a so-called "weep hole" in the pump to allow coolant, which is leaking past the seal, to escape to the outside of the engine. A small puddle of coolant on the floor can alert a perspicacious owner to an impending disaster.
Dealers do not recommend changing the pump along with the timing belt but they should. The labor is fairly intense getting to the timing belt and water pump. Therefore the majority of the cost of either is the labor. While having the timing belt changed, it is a rather trivial matter to also change the pump. The dealer would probably like to have you return in another 30k miles for a new pump and to charge the labor all over again. Always change the pump with the new belt. Cheap insurance!
If that is a hairline crack on the new pump, then yes, return it. If just a superficial scratch then its ok. If in doubt, just return it.
