Default 2005 LS430 stereo upgrade - comments ?

I mostly am enjoying the sound of my OEM Lexus premium stereo at low volumes, but want to improve it so it sounds just as good at high volume.

I was thinking to use the existing amp for the front speakers and leave them stock, and power new rear speakers with a new, more powerful amp ... think this will sound better ?

Thanks

You're going about that backwards mate. For best imaging and clarity, you want to sound to come from in front of you,not behind.

I haven't looked at what's in my car in any serious way so far,so I can't comment on what's in there and what it can do,but any system can be upgraded. How difficult it is to do that, and how much you have to spend vs. how much you're willing to spend to get the improvement will determine the results you'll get.

I would start with sound deadening first,to get the best stage possible, and then look at components.
Most of the comments in the many ML system threads will be relevant here also,it would pay to read through those as well.

I am not going to bother trying to make the car quieter for the stereo - it's very quiet already - just looking to put some extra volume into the rear speakers. I agree the fronts are important for imaging, but the fronts seem to be adequate now.

Any other input on my idea of changing the rear speakers and adding a separate, more powerful amp ...... thanks !

If I made a change I'd swap out everything and have a high end custom audio shop do the work. Upgrade all components, modern design speakers, more powerful amp, and a new head unit - also redoing it I'd make sure I had it installed so I would have better access to replace components in the future. Bag the cd player - its ancient history, maybe get a DVD player if you car about movies in the car - I don't care about movies so I'd just make sure I had a state of the art iPod and blue tooth interface built into the head unit.

Rather than starting a new thread for a simple answer. I hope you dont mind me slightly hi-jacking this thread.
But is it possible to get an aftermarket head unit ie. a pioneer or alpine double DIN touchscreen headunit to work with the steering wheel controls?
I would love to get a nice touch panel unit with navi inbuilt, but would really hate losing the steering wheel controls.
Thanks guys.

Default car stereo enhancements

owner of 2003 Ls430. Basically you need to have a car/stereo shop put in an 'amp kit', you can buy your own amp (usually much cheaper that way!), and ask the shop about the speakers you are wanting to put in there, they should be able to tell you if they would fit or mount

An aftermarket amp can be integrated into the stock system, but you will still need the factory radio control unit to adjust the volume of the sub.

I have a RF 4 ch 1000w powering the doors and rear deck, the stock amp powering just the sub. It sounds OK.....but still much to be desired.

i just took out my stock sub and replaced with 1 12 in a box and an extra amp for the sub... i wanted more ba ba ba ba ba ba base.... now i want to upgrade even more since i am sick of my half assed attempt to satisfy my craving for ba ba ba ba ba ba base with a single 500 watt amp going to a single 12".

thinking about either doubling up or doing a single 12" (different one) with a 1k watt amp in the near future.

So good to know I can add a rear amp, and thats going to happen soon

I have a 2005 LS, where exactly is the subwoofer ? Never has a sub in a car before.

I guess no one knows the power output of the Lexus amp ... I am curious.

anyway, two final questions ... what size are the rear door speakers, and are there speakers in the rear deck too ? id yes, what size are they?

in my UL the rear speakers are on the rear doors and i believe they are 6.5". no idea about stock power output. on a non UL the sub is in the rear deck shelf but on a UL i gwess its a little more complicated to get to.
