Hoping someone can help as I don't really want to make a mortgage payment to the dealer.

When I start the car, the navigation map comes on for about 3-5 seconds. Then it just stops and I get a message saying:

Unable to read data.
Check if map DVD is correct.


It almost sounds like the system loses power or stops spinning the disc. I've taken the disc out for cleaning. It is the original disc and has not been upgraded.

Does anyone have a solution? Or at least a suggestion?

 

There are several postings about Nav problems but mostly they focus on the following as the source of your problem: Bad disk, bad nav unit and loose or dirty connections. The easiest thing to do, is try another navigation disk. I don't know how old your version of the Nav data disk is, but you could buy a slightly newer OEM data disk on Ebay for a reasonable price. It would probably update your firmware, so you would need to keep that disk and not use the current one anymore. Assuming the newer data disk is O.K. and it isn't recognized, then you have more serious problems.

Try cleaning the connections, but you need some guidance on that. If that doesn't do it, then it would be a good time to check around for prices from salvage yards. The Nav unit in the trunk is very easy to swap out. However, if you get a newer model Nav unit, you will be in for some very major modifications I am told.

Becareful about the version of disc you stick in there. If you happen to borrow a disk from someone that is a new version, when you put it in it will update the system and there there is no going back.

2002 is Gen. 3 Nav. unit. So, look for anything Gen. 3. It seems you have pulled the CD and cleaned it already. Were there any signs of scratches? If not, then probably not a bad disc so would suspect then that dirty laser. If so, get a CD player cleaner and put that in for the recommended instructions. Then give the old disc another try.

Always try the easiest fix and so forth... leading up to the most expensive, being getting a new unit.
