VERY strange brake sound, 04 LS 430, 55K miles
All,
This has me perplexed: during a moderately hard, long brake, the front left brake makes what sounds like, a crunching noise. The sound stops immedately after releasing the pedal. There is nothing felt thru the pedal like the ABS is working, and i am not braking hard enough to engage the ABS anyway (I know what that sounds like). It is only heard on the front left. I had the car looked at at the last oil change, and the pads were at 60% used. No error lights on, rotor looks fine, brake fluid level fine, car does not pull to left or right. Totally worried, as I have never had any car make this noise.

I had the same symptoms when I had an 04 CTS. The problem went away after a couple days and the dealer said it was likely a stone wedged in the brake. If you drive in reverse and applying the brakes a few times, it may come dislodged. It may also come dislodged by itself after grinding down some more.

i've had the same problem intermittently for years; usually when it's cold outside. Either during braking and sometimes when turning the wheel at low speeds (when parking).
When I took the car in for the TB and water pump they lubed the front stabilizer bar.
Problem's gone for the time being....
