why does GPS "sometimes" show me that I'm at wrong street?

hey guys,

When I use the GPS, it shows me that I'm at the wrong street or I'm driving next to the actual street "parallel", and suddenly brings me to the actual street. I feel its not accurate at the positioning !!

is it because of the old version and I need to update? or the problem from the antenna??

I have 2001 LS430 Ultra pak.

any suggestions !!

Thanks in advance,
BA

oh, I forgot to mention that this problem happens SOMETIMES not always..

Is this in the city with highrises, or in "open" country or suburbs? Most GPS don't work or position in major cities very well, even the built in ones with dead reckoning. If in city, I would say normal, if in open sky, then probably need to readjust the NAV. There have been forums on how to do this, just do a search on recalibarting the GPS. I think the owners manual has something on this also.

unfortunately, this is happen in open country. i live in a small town. the tallest building is 4 floors, and there are only 3 buildings like this.
I think I might do what you suggested "readjust the NAV". is it on this forum??

Maybe he thinks the GPS wants to see where it is going.. LOL like it might be reading street signs LOL>... Could also be if you have any added metallic tints that would cause interference in GPS pick-up... Kind of what it sounds like to me.. How far off are the location shown, as opposed to the actual 10-20??

Metallic tinting can/does distort the GPS signal.

"sometimes" Navi just "F" up... sometimes give you bad directions also... made me take some long way, while my sister Honda was giving her better directions and she corrected me since she was following me. On one highway (270) in Maryland, my navi wants me to get off certain exit and go back on the highway for no frecking reason every single time (so damn stupid, and no it's not thing wrong with my settings) But overall, I can't do w/o navi in my car.

Park the car on the side of a major highway.re-calibrate the nav on the side of the road.

It is normal for it to be off sometimes. It happens every now and then.

 same here !!! On my trips down to DC, the GPS for some reason always wants me to take this one exit near this bridge. All it does is it makes me exit, take a left, and then turn right back onto 95 south. First time I did it, I thought "what the heck? I'm back on 95" so next time, stupid me I took it again thinking maybe I turned wrong last time, same thing. So, now I just keep on 95.

What I do wonder is, what is the default for the NAV when you're moving already? Example, when you're stopped, you can selected one of three routes. When you're moving, the GPS just goes to "some route." Does it take the shortest or quickest?

As for metallic tint, I don't think it matters too much. The antenna for the GPS unit is somewhere under the hood near the firewall, so unless you've tinted the windshield with metallic tint, then doubt it would cause any erroneous reading.

I think OP's problem might just be a sensitive antenna and if it just happens "some times" then just gotta live with it, or bring to Lexus and have them look at it and replace "whatever" for hundreds of dollars.

I notice it mess up sometimes. I think it's when it is cloudy. I will be driving one way and it will say I'm driving the opposite. It is either losing the signal or just temporarily messing up.

bassil2022 Jul 15, 2009 09:47 AM

So, from what you are saying guys, this is a commen problem and it can't be fixed.

is that problem with all Lexus's cars or just the older once ???
