Default Reliability of HID fog lights

To LS430 Owner that installed HID fog lights

How long ago did you install the lights?
has anyone got prblem yet?
Where did you place your Ballast?

I installed mine on 4 May drove to San Diego from Las Vegas on Sunday and one of the ballast broke. Had to replace the ballast...

its a question of quailty, get a reliable ballast, and it should outlive your car.

I wouldn't say "outlive" but the should certainly stick around for some time. The bulbs can also go bad. I had a kit on my car (not LS) for 6-7 years before it went bad.

You got yourself a bad ballast. I would check with the company you bought it from, I would think they would replace it.

You can get the oem lexus brand ballasts: koito/denso from classified sections here or ebay.

I have a 2 pairs of the lexus slim ballast that I bought on ebay, 2 I used for my GS headlights and 2 that were going to be used for the fog set up.

Another Japanese brand is matus h i t a for the nissans.

Here's an example, Hella is a Germany brand. Bosch is another brand.
Ironic that the only thing electronically reliable is their ballast

I mail the defective ballast last Thursday, 8 May. They mailed the replacement today, I should received it in two days. From what I know, there are more than 25 people use these HID and no one has a problem until now. I have bought a total of 6 sets and only one went bad. Not bad for $70 a set. Hope it last 6-7 yrs like other poster here.

Great advice, thank you so much!

The OEM Lexus/Toyota, koito/denso ballasts is what I want, care to explain which Lexus the slim ballast came from? Do all Lexus cars with stock HID come with the slim ballast?

Thanks!

No problem.

Definitely the RX and LS use the slim ballasts b/c when I bought the headlights, the slim ballasts came with them.

I'm going to safely assume the 2001+ models, that's what I noticed so far.

I don't know about the ES, but the older 2000> GS use those older one-the bigger black ballast.

Make sure you get the 9006 relay harness if you're going to wire them up for the fogs. Check the classifieds or even Cliffud, he's a vendor now

Here's my LS430 retro for my GS:

Your retro looks great, good job!

I am a virgin at these HID stuff, please excuse my noob questions. All our Lexuses came stock with HID (see my sigs), but I want to put 9006 HID into my LS430's fog, all of your help is greatly appreciated

Can you be a little more specific with the cars, which year and model # of RX and LS? LS430? RX330?

I know our 2001 ES300 came with the bigger black ballast. Never look at the ballast of our 03' GS.

I thought the only connector matters is the one that goes from the ballast to the bulb, which is not on the harness. Am I wrong?

They are pretty easy to install, I had them in my GS4 fog lights, only thing is you need find a way to route the wiring to the battery.
Here is my GS4 installation, I don't like the way they are exposed in the engine bay.

[QUOTE=BNR34;3524520]Thanks again!

No problem, we're all here to learn new things, spend more $$$,

Your retro looks great, good job!
Thank you, it's a pride and joy when it was completed. Took forever though.

I am a virgin at these HID stuff, please excuse my noob questions. All our Lexuses came stock with HID (see my sigs), but I want to put 9006 HID into my LS430's fog, all of your help is greatly appreciated

You'll need:
1. 9006 Wiring harness. It harness contains a relay that draws the power from the battery without draining the car's electrical system.
2. 2 lexus oem ballasts
3. 9006 rebased D2R bulbs. Oem fogs use the 9006 halogen bulb. HID bulbs come as D2R (for reflector type headlight such as the 01-03 LS430) and D2S (which is used in projector type headlights like the 04-06 LS430).
So you'll be using the D2R bulb that is rebased to fit as a 9006 bulbs.

I don't have any pictures but it's much easier to understand once you see it

Can you be a little more specific with the cars, which year and model # of RX and LS? LS430? RX330?

I know our 2001 ES300 came with the bigger black ballast. Never look at the ballast of our 03' GS.

the slim ballasts are found the rx330 and up, 01+LS430. I'm not sure about the LS400 or other cars.

I thought the only connector matters is the one that goes from the ballast to the bulb, which is not on the harness. Am I wrong?
Well partly true b/c you'll be adding the extra wiring relay harness. So it goes like this:

D2R rebased 9006 bulb---->ballast---->extra wiring harness-----> battery (+ and -) and fog light harness

The hardest part is actually running the wires to make it a clean installation.
I'll see if there are pictures in the GX470 sections.
