Weird Maintenance Required Soon notification ?
I have owned a 2004 LS430 now with 61,000 miles on it for 17 years.I usually put on less than 1,500 miles a year. So using regular oil I was told and I change the oil Apx. once a year. What happened this time after 7 months and 800 miles since last oil change For The First Time EVER the maintenance requires soon signal goes on ? My question is Why Now ? For the record , like many other owners I leak very little oil from the rings But during the last oil change 7 months ago the oil showed Full before the change. This oil change again I was told there was a very little oil leak as was usual . I called a Lexus Service Rep. and he said it could be the AGE of the car, What?? Thanks for all your help.
To the best of my knowledge/experience, with 15 years of ownership, the light goes on every 5000 miles (slightly earlier as warning to do it soon). Dealer probably gave an idiot answer. It is likely not time based and certainly oil-monitor based (no oil life monitor in these). Resetting is always manual: set trip odometer OFF (no display), turn off car, then press both trip buttons at once (reset and mode I think) ON THE DASHBOARD. Holding them in continuously, put key and/or starter **** in accessory position: just short of starting. with the 2 buttons held, "oil reset" or similar should pop up in a few seconds on the dash messages, and the light turns off. This is in the manual somewhere. If not reset even without service light going off at last oil change or two or three, the miles just keep accumulating from last reset point. So after 2 or 3 changes with low miles you can get the message at an odd time when the 5000 range gets hit. Not meaningful. Hope this applies/answers.
As an aside, with low miles also, during Covid, I did go a year, but that was exception. I try to go around every 6-7 months now. Sync it with my annual inspection for 1 less trip. I usually just get conventional 5w30. So far so good at 160k-ish miles.

Or it could be the maintenance reminder light went on due to time (1 year) and the previous tech did not reset the reminder 7 months ago.
What I do I keep written records of every oil change by date and mileage and change it every six months or so regardless of mileage. .

Thanks guys for getting back to me. The maint. required soon pop up , I'm told only refers only to needing an oil change. For 17 years with the miles I put on I have the regular oil changed between 9 and 12 months. Once at 8 or 9 months when I went for the oil change they sent me home saying the oil was full and totally clear and I did not need an oil change. Never did I ever receive this notification at the start up of my car. I don't think they have to reset this maint. notification if it never appeared . In fact this time when they reset this alert some one got in the car and did it manually . I don't ever remember that being done as I always stay seated in the car as the the oil is being changed. Don't know whats going on.
You might have missed the reset if they knew what thy were doing and did it fast, such as when turning on car to read the odometer. My light went off regularly when I drove more miles and let it get past 5k, or when I remember they did not reset it and I didn't bother to. This should be of no concern. It is completely normal for this light to go on and would be abnormal not to go if someone did not reset it. Likely a non-issue. Just reset it and I'll bet you are good for at least 5k or perhaps 6 months.
Look in the on-screen system under Maintenance. There are a whole load of options in there if you like your car to nag you.
Some dealers set these up, others don't. Personally I disabled all mine and keep a spreadsheet of what is needed and when.
