Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the water pump <<inside>> the engine?? Hence when engine is 'open' and timing belt is being replaced, water pump is replaced also??

The water pump is mounted in the front part of the engine behind the timing cover and drive by the timing belt. It's a good idea to replace the water pump when doing the timing belt, but some shop just do the timing belt only( cheaper advertising price).
mbws400, when the water pump leaks its only leaks water, but there's the front crank seal and cam seals that can leak oil. I recommend to replace all the oil seal when do the water pump+ check all the pulley and tension behind the timing covers.
