Default Equivalencies to dextron 3

In my class we will be replacing my rack and components, (for free :$) my bone head self forgot to order the dextron, is there any substitute close to It I can use for the new rack until I can get OEM fluid. Original owner ran ps fluid from Walmart with stop leak which made it worse.

Dexron (no T in the name) is available EVERYWHERE

Also what do you mean by "OEM" fluid...? Dexron is the OE spec for the power steering system not Toyota T-IV

Agree with RA40 on the M1 ATF

Yes, in general, our PS systems specify DEXRON II, superseded to DEXRON III. Now that III is mostly (and officially) obsolete, DEXRON VI should work.

DEXRON is probably the most common ATF out there.

Unlike AT systems, PS tend to be much less affected by off-spec fluids. So people will strongly recommend Toyota Type T-IV ATF in your AT, while that is actually pretty close to DEXRON III. And in an AT it might make a difference. But in a PS system, it is less of a problem. But there is a bigger difference between DEXRON III and "power steering fluid + stop leak off the shelf at pep boys", so it's a good thing you got it out of there.

There are all kinds of ATFs out there that are pretty close to DEXRON III, and I bet any of them will work fine in your PS system. Mobil1, DEXRON VI, Toyota Type T-IV, etc.

Ahh I see, sorry as you can tell by original post I’m doing this in school so I’m still learning. From what I read on another thread a user made it seem as if dexron was the only thing I could put in there and anything else would be incorrect, gonna be doing the MOBILE 1 ATF, estimate of how much fluid the rack and pump takes?

DEX fluid is relatively cheap so I would guestimate 3 quarts to start. the system should not be very voluminous.

keep learning and you are asking the right questions!
