OK.. am I trippin? 1st vs 2nd gen question

Why do the first gen LS's have two radiator fans and the 2nd gens only have one?

Or are they all supposed to have two fans? The 1999 I picked up today has one fan. :chicken:

/I peeped the owners manual it says "cooling fan" I.E. one, but wanted other's input as well. Thank you.

That is correct, gen 1s have 2 fans, your 99 only has 1.

Don't the 2nd gens technically have two?

The main cooling fan operated by a hydraulic fan clutch, and then an auxillary electric cooling fan that's mostly for the air conditioning off to the side? While the first gen had two electric fans in addition to the main cooling can for a total of 3.

It depends on the market area.

My '90 and '94 had only one electric fan, and my '98 has none!

Dude, I wonder why they got rid of fans? I'd figure more fans MORE COOOOOOOOLing.

I thought my 99 was missing one lol...

no idea why the took away one of the cooling fans for the ucf20. either to cut costs down of for weight reduction because well, racecar. :D

The reason was given in post #4. It depended on market, i.e. the range of climates that might be encountered.

On the LHD gen 2 LS400 with one electric fan, the number of fan vanes even varied depending on market, e.g. more fan vanes for the Middle East.

When looking up service for mine it looks like it's been in CA the whole time, but one electric fan

Of course it does. All gen 2 (95-00) LS400 sold in the U.S. came with one electric fan in front of the radiator. One electric fan is enough. The 2000 LS400 I drove for 11 years also had one electric fan and its temperature gauge read the same temperature after the engine was up to operating temperature whether the outside temperature was -20 or 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
