Default Gen 1 rear half shaft replacement

Losing my search touch - is there a tutorial around for rear half shaft replacement? Is the bearing replacement mandatory? Really just need to replace broken boot. Thanks.

Funny I am looking for the same thing. It should not be too hard as I believe it is listed as 1 hr labor charge (and those are usually over-estimated). But it could be hard down there if you have on lift, which I don't.
As for the bearing, it is not mandatory, that much I know, but if your CV joint was in a really bad shape and vibrating, it probably shortened the lifespan of the bearing on the same side, so it would be wise to at least check that bearing.

Seems simple enough - just need to find a boot that fits - guess i'll call lexus. I found this thread which says it's just like pulling a front axle but without the steering complication. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...half-shaft.htm
That said none of the universal boots from AutoZone provide dimensions. Rock Auto doesn't offer a boot. Febest has a universal boot and lists dimensions as 73 x 96 x 21.4 - guessing that's in mm and likely is too small.. Called a local CV joint place who said they don't do just boots. $400 parts and labor for replacement shaft - but this is a low mileage car.

Here is a link where you can buy the boot:
http://www.rockfordcv.com/rcvboot.htm
http://www.rockfordcv.com/Lexus_bootkits.htm
http://www.rockfordcv.com/Bootkit_li...s.htm#BK550-22

Those guys come highly recommended - they don't use neoprene but thermoplastic which should last a long time.

Default Anyone replaced CV Boots? Need how-to (and for the shaft too)

Hey TDIGREEN1, that link you left is dead. Any other write-ups on how to replace the rear cv shaft? I am thinking of trying this myself, provided it is not too hard to do.
BTW, I bought a used one from '91 (mine is '90), and it is looking quite good - boots are perfect, no loose feeling in it. But I am thinking of putting on new boots, except that seems to be a hell of a job. Anyone done that?
