Leaking steering rack
 

About a year ago the original steering rack on my 1998 LS was leaking and tore a boot. I replaced the steering rack in May 2018 with Cardone brand remanufactured from Advance Auto Parts. Guess what? It is LEAKING at the boot - AGAIN. I should have just paid the $1297 and had the dealer do it so it would be quality remanufactured and warrantied. My question is, has anyone tried the Lucas (or any other brand) stop leak solution? I would rather try a cheap fix for now than worry about the unexpected leaking steering rack again.

Somebody on the forum mentioned this a while back and I put it in my favorites just in case:

Are you currently using Dextron? The manual states that you can use II or III.

I can't recall exactly. I would like to try a stop-leak solution and see how it works out. I imagine using Toyota transmission fluid would be the way to go since that is what the rack was filled with from the factory but it can be pricey. By the way I'm not a huge fan of silver cars but that Alpine Silver LS400 is stunning. It was one of my top choices before finding an Atlantis Blue.

The system was filled with Dextron Automatic Transmission Fluid from the factory. Would love to see a picture of the Atlantis Blue model. I wanted Black on Black, but the condition and service history of this silver model won out.

I dont think a "power steering" stop leak will work with Dextron fluid, you might read up.. maybe a transmission stop leak would work..
just thinking out loud....

I was watching a utuber mechanic the other day and he had to put 4 racks from AA in a car before he found one that worked. Then 8 months later the one that worked- failed. If you think you're aggravated, do it for a living and get paid half wages for all your reinstalls.

Im using lucas thick stuff, isnt stopping it yet. Will try this

Just saw a Scotty Kilmer where he was talking about AT 205 Re-Seal.Its a plasticizer that doesnt swell seals with petroleum distillates.He says the problem with sealers and power steering is the high pressures so it doesnt always work so well,but says worth a try.Never used it myself,and Scotty is not one to use 'snake oil' products but says this one is a winner.

I like Scotty,guy seems very honest and real deal.
