Default Tach and Speedometer not working-1998

Hello all. First time posting here. I have a 1998 LS400 with about 270000 miles I have noticed in the last year that the Tach&Spedo were not working when I was driving..I smacked the top of the dash directly above them and "Presto" they both popped up and worked perfectly. I'm sure someone has discovered this before but I hope this may help someone...I've been doing it intermittently for a year now and it's still working .
Thanks.

Recent trip to VA. Look at the mpg in this old boat.

Well known secret, glad you found the quick fix. If you search here you'll find the real fix, which requires removing the cluster and cleaning up the grease that accumulates on the rest point on the back side.
Nice looking specimen and congrats on all the miles.
Welcome to the club... Like those wheels on your Lexus. Much better than stock in my opinion.

It's just a slight, quick rap Spuds when you're driving... they pop up easily... I think that's a better solution than letting them stick and the system trying to drive them to the proper reading.
Not sure what additional strain that is putting on the mechanism when they're stuck, but cluster still attempts to drive them.... maybe someone else knows this answer.

It's just a light tap, and I seriously can tell a difference in the idle if those are stuck..

Thanks for the reply..I assumed others had the problem with it too. I learned my technique out of frustration .. As far as the wheels, those were $100 apiece at Discount Tire . Glad you like them.

I like your wheels also.. Are those 17" wheels? I would replace mine if I could find a good deal on a set like yours. IMO Lexus really knows how to make a classy wheel, and car for that matter.. ..

On the cars with the electronic mileage gauge....where is that number stored,on the cluster or a computer in the car?

The figures are processed and stored in the non volatile memory on the cluster.

I went again last wknd and drove back on Monday..Didn't hit much traffic on the way back and was on cruise almost all the way. Only a Japanese V8, rear wheel drive could get this mileage at over 260k miles on the original powertrain..Gotta love those 98% made in Japan cars. Hope I'm not bragging to much as I am very thankful as this is my daily driver...
