Default Looking for a KYB quick strut for my LS400? Any help out there?

Hey LS owners I am looking to do a suspension job soon and I heard KYB was the oem. I would like to find a quick strut assembly. Has anyone found a KYB assembly? Do I have to have new springs? Looking for help from the pros. Btw she has 178k on her.

This topic has been discussed numerous times. KYB makes OEM but they are slightly different from KYB Excel-G. I think the OEM KYB bushings are thicker. Keep in mind the OEM KYBs are very expensive, $220+ USD each. KYB Excel-G can be had for around $75 a pop. There is no full assembly available for the LS that I know of and I've searched for it extensively. You can reuse your old spring assuming they aren't cracked or rusted. The LS has robust springs that will literally last 100,000's of miles. Remember when replacing the shocks it is a good idea to replace (or at least inspect) the strut mount, bumper, and boot.

Default Thanks

I appreciate it Waverunner. I remember seeing something a while ago but couldn’t find it again. Getting used to the new platform. My concern was about the springs which you answered for me.
Your opinion on the best shock closest to OEM?
Thanks again!

I have not replaced mine yet. I have done extensive research on the subject though. Ideally I want OEM but can't get myself to spend $850+ on the shocks alone for all four. My second pick would be the KYB Excel-G since they are made by the same manufacturer and according to some on this board are very close to OEM once they have broken in. New shocks will always feel stiff until around 10k miles. Whatever you do, stay away from the made in China junk. The Excel-G is already low priced so no need to get anything else really unless you are willing to shell out for the OEM. The Lexus dealer actually uses them as alternatives to OEM. Of course they want a ridiculous amount, dealer markup and installation and all. Rockauto has them for around $75 a pop I believe.

I have put Excel-G KYBs on numerous Toyotas and Lexus's and thought the ride quality was the same from what i could tell. One of them was a GX470 which I swapped the factory adjustables (which were also made by KYB) with excel-gs off a 4Runner, and the ride quality was the same afterwards

Thanks everyone, for the valuable input. I have a 1991 LS400 and the compressor for the factory air suspension went out. I am considering converting to a conventional strut setup if I cannot replace or repair the compressor. If I have to convert to struts, I want to retain as much as the smooth ride quality as possible. If anyone has any information on a compressor repair or replacement for a reasonable price ($1700+ for a new compressor from Lexus), that would be really helpful.

Another Excel G shock owner here on my 97. I did my LCA bushings, Strut mounts, bumpstops and bellows along with the shocks since everything was well worn or torn at 275k. The new shocks felt stiff initially but after 5k miles and being broken in, they feel nice and supportive, not firm, yet not floaty and overly soft. I've also got a lifetime warranty through Autozone if anything were to happen so I'm not worried.
