I have a leaking power steering pump on my 97 LS400. I cleaned the screen in the solenoid(it was completely plugged) on the rack and looked over the system. The leak appears to be coming from the pump itself and is dripping onto the alternator so I had better fix it soon. The steering is actually nice and smooth still, but I can't let it keep dripping....

Anyway, in checking ebay I see that a new OEM pump is about $600, but a rebuilt OEM pump is only $140, plus a $40 core deposit. I figure I will just go with the rebuilt.

Any reason I should spend more?

The pump on my 95 was toast when i first bought it. I picked up a re-manufactured one from NAPA for about $140 or so and it has worked flawlessly for several years now.

There are alot of things that are just crap when they are rebuilt by one of the Auto-part chain stores( alternators and starters, as an example) but Power Steering pumps are not one of them from my personal experience.

The rebuilt steering pump in my 89' 4Runner from Orielys (sp?) has been working flawlessly since i put it in, in 2006.

Another thing you can do if you have a second car to drive in the mean time, is find a local shop that specializes in power steering gear. I had a local shop do my Old Landcruisers pump, and it was only about $80.

Bought a re-manufactured Cardone part from Rockauto for my '97 when I faced the same situation (except my alternator went totally out). I'd recommend it.

A-1 CARDONE Part # 215899 is the part you want.

i work at napa auto parts..we used to sell cardone..had so many issues with them we switched to another rebuild company..guess what,issues with those as well. maval is oem i think, i would hunt one down on rock auto

^ If you don't mind me asking, what were the issues? Pure had suggested the Cardone replacement in my thread about a leaky p/s pump a while back.

No personal experience but my mechanic who specializes in only Toyota/Lexus has told me several times that he won't install anything but OEM power steering pumps because of the constant nightmares that the aftermarket and rebuilt pumps have given him. He's lost several customers due to having to replace the rebuilt ones several times. Same thing goes for the racks.

leaky seals..whining..low/incorrrect pressure.
just sold one the other day to our best customer(shop) for a 01 camaro with a 3.8 v6..noisey right out of the box..first one leaked. rebuilder...BBB industries. aftermarket pumps are hit and miss. rack and pinions not as much but still problematic.

Anyone had success in buying a low mileage pull out from a Junkyard car? I know the seals do get age but another factor is also the work the pump has put into.
