No way a 16k mil engine would look like that. IMHO this is a flood car.

It’s not believed this is original as is stated in the ad

This gap drew my attention. If it was straight wouldn’t it be aligned perfectly?

Upon opening the trunk to my surprise I found water sitting in the spare tire.

It was sitting for a long time and when I revved it smelled like a burning oil/gas smell

Nothing much to look at.
Well this morning I took a drive out to see this clean LS or so I thought. To my surprise there were a few odd finds that caught my attention and here it is boy am I glad I didn’t buy this scrap or leave a deposit. The paint is in really good condition and looked to be original hence why I went to see it.

So what's the seller's story about on the background of this car? Surely some history of this car could be obtained via the VIN.

No, the door alignment wouldn't necessarily be perfect but it looks pretty good. I wouldn't expect the engine compartment of a car that has been mostly sitting for 18 years to be clean - dust and dirt happens.

I've seen plenty of super low mileage older cars. Most were owned by older drivers who either kept them at their winter homes and rarely drove them or who stopped or decreased driving due to age or infirmity but still kept them just in case. My 95 year old father's 1999 Buick is a good example. It has very few miles on it, is driven a few miles a year and sits in the parking garage of his assisted living facility. I start the engine and drive it around the block every few months to charge the battery.

Seller said car was laid up for a while in storage and was bought from an estate sale. X2 about the vin. It’s not what it should be condition wise. It was at a body shop and they had it parked up like it was junk if it was a big money item it wouldn’t be in a tight spot. It would be open and pretty to show to anyone if you got it then show it. Just my .02

Well it's not junk but it is a fairly low value 18 year old car of limited appeal. I'm not at all surprised that a body shop would treat it this way.

The main people who would be interested in a car like this are LS400 enthusiasts.

I liked the 2000 LS400 that I drove daily for 11 years a lot but I wouldn't touch one today with a 10 foot pole since I want modern technology.

what does that sticker in the engine bay say?
either way this car is very much not in 16k condition, though the lower door cladding is suppose to have that gap down there (normal).
I always wondered if someone were to swap a cluster in, I would assume the mileage of the new(er) cluster would reflect.

Some LS400s can get some moisture in the trunk around the spare tire, however, 16k mile car? Doesn't really look like it to me. Seems like it could very well be a swapped out cluster.

I'd run the vin before ruling it out completely. If not, PM one of us the vin, I'm interested in looking it up

The car was on Craigslist in Queens, NY. The ad is gone now, so maybe OP bought it?

Hell no I wouldn’t waste my money on that sour lemon . I’ll hold out for something better looking for a 430 or RL and am good.
