Default What to do when camshaft or crankshaft moves on interference engine.

I have 91 LS400 and planing to do timing belt job myself. I know 91 is non interference engine. But my question is regarding interference engine, lets say I am working 96 LS400 which is interference engine. What to do when camshaft or crankshaft moves during timing belt installation, while the timing belt is off. Can I individually rotate each cam and crankshaft close wise to line them up to the timing mark or it's going to damage the valves?

My thoughts are YES you will.... why would you move them, knowing the engine is interference?

All you can do is rotate it back, to answer you question. There is no reason why things should move much with the belt off. You need to be very careful tho and only rotate BACK, the opposite way the shafts moved accidentally, if you go the other way you will damage valves etc.
Hypothetically of course. Better off just trying to keep everything in place. You will feel the contact tho, if you are turning it by hand, and should know when to stop.

If you rotate the crank to 50 degrees past top dead center you can turn the cams and they will not contact the crankshaft while the belt is off. Why does this even matter? You have a 91.

I know it's not relevant to my car but I just wanted to know for my knowledge. This question has been in my mind for the past month or so but I couldn't find an answer.

One more question, once u move the crankshaft to 50 degrees past top dead center then can u move the camshaft clockwise or anti clockwise?

Cool. I know thing's shouldn't move but lets say during removal of camshaft pulley, it move accidentally that's why I wanted to know what to do in that case. Some times thing happens unintentionally.

In the end its cheaper to have it done, by someone that will warrant the work. Then you don't have to worry about messing it up. Sorry but modern auto engines are not the place to LEARN to be a mechanic, that is if its on your expensive or daily driver and car you need.

I had my bank one cam rotate on my 1996 ls400 while it was TDC and I was about to put the belt back on. You just have to rotate the cam back toward the direction it fell from back to TDC. No big deal.
