Default Distance between oil pickup and oil pan.

1996 LS400

My oil pan appears to be gently bowed up in the middle-ish, like someone started to jack up the engine using the pan.

Everything else seems to be fine, so I really don't feel like playing with fipg if I don't have to.

Does anyone have an idea how close the oil pickup is to the pan? I can't seem to get good information.

Thanks!

Too close masks the intake, too far means less oil above the pickup.
Kinda what I figured on distance.

I guess the real question becomes-

Does anyone with a 96 know if your stock pan is completely flat on the bottom? At first I thought for sure someone bowed it with a jack, but after further observation I'm not 100 percent sure it's even supposed to be completely flat.

Is a stock oil pan on a 96 supposed to be completely flat? Here are a couple shots of mine.

Default Oil pan for 96 LS supposed to be flat?

I'm very sorry for the double post, but the way I posted before was not optimal for results. I'll let that one die. Sorry!

Anyway, my oil pan's not flat on the bottom. Is yours? Here are pictures of mine. Is this normal for a 96 stock pan?

It can be anywhere from 10mm to 13mm. It looks bent up.

Is yours a 2nd gen?

I ask because while I know the first gen pans are flat, a picture of the famed 900,000 mile 96 LS shows that it's pan may be bent like mine (the shot's not perfectly clear).

I know it's possible for that one to also be damaged, but it looks to be bent in exactly the same way, which leads me to the possibility that maybe it's supposed to be like that. Too bad it's the only picture I could find. Hopefully you have a first gen or something and mine's not really bent.

Glad you quoted it because someone made the post disappear.
Maybe someone is trying to tell me, they don't want me here anymore.

Stay. We want you. Especially if you tell me your 96 has the same oil pan appearance. 😉

Do you see the 2 scratches near the oil drain plug. Pan should be flat.

Torque spec for the oil pan bolts is 7.5 Nm.

Yeah, I do. I was hoping that was a coincidence. Well, I'll drop it this Saturday and hope there's been no long term damage from oil obstruction at the pickup.

Does anyone know the torque spec for the oil pan boltson a 96? I'd hate to techinfo it for such a simple repair.

I have a 97 and my pan looks exactly like that so yes it is normal and was not accidentally jacked up.

I would leave the pan alone unless you have a leak you want to take care of, or are still concerned with the pickup.
remember these were put on by robots at a factory so you will need extra care applying FIPG by hand.

This is exactly the post I was hoping for.

I have no other issues and don't want to drop the pan for no reason. If that's how it's supposed to be, then I have no concern over the oil pickup, as I'm sure it's fine.

I will seal up that scrape on the side to quell any rust-through, but if the pan's supposed to look like that, I'm happy to leave it alone.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

I admit I had to double check myself too , but my gut was fairly certain when I posted earlier.
