That sounds hilariously complex in every sense. Not only would it likely need to be adapted to fit onto a 1UZ, it might not even fit in the transmission tunnel. On top of that you'd probably need a custom ECU to get it all to work together- I don't imagine a 90s ECU meant to manage a 5 speed would be able to just plug straight into a modern 8 speed and function at all.

On a related note, I've wondered recently if the 5 speed auto from the UCF20/21 could be put into a UCF10/11, likely along with a later ECU.

the A650e is a great transmission, mines still chugging along at 272k, would definitely go well in an older model Ls400. 8 speed transmission on the other hand, good luck with that haha

It will not bolt up. You could do it however you would need a standalone ECU to run it properly. Its a much newer computer system that the old ECU would not be able to interact with.

It would likely be less expensive and easier to swap in a 5-6 speed manual

the transmission controller is not independent from the ECU so as Moarpower stated it will need a standalone ECU to run the trans properly. that's just one hurdle then to mount it is another, which is not a bolt-on affair to the block. it's not impossible but it's going to be extremely expensive. might as well swap the entire engine/trans/wiring/ECU over if you want those extra gears. it's not really feasible in my eyes.

The 8 speed comes with its own ECU... Well, it has 'an' ECU, whether its enough to use it on another motor I don't know. I'm looking at getting a 1UR-FSE (LS460) complete with an 8 speed. I'm currently trying to get measurements of both 1UZ and 1UR motors and transmissions. A lightweight '99 LS400 with a 380hp 460 (or more to the point loads of torque) with an 8 speed would be just beautiful.

The issue is the motors relationship with the trans, not the trans computer. Im sure it can be done with enough money. But you will likely still need to remove the stock ecu as it will not be able to communicate with the transmission. If you can find a good shop, you could certainly swap in the trans. If you were going to swap in the motor and trans you would be better of buying a 460 as that will take some serious $$ unless you are able to do most of the work yourself.

3-5 k will get you a 6 spd manual swap installed.

Yes I understand putting an 8 speed behind a 1UZ would be stupid & impractical idea. I'm thinking I have 2 choices. Supercharge the 1UZ or do an entire 1UR-FSE (460 8 speed) swap. Would probably cost the same each way... I must have way too much time on my hands.....

A UR swap would be really cool if you could get everything inside to function as intended. Sounds like a fun project with unlimited time and money haha.

People spend a lot more on a lot older. I'm all for anyone doing these kinds of projects.

cheaper to sell the car and buy an Ls460 the.
I still say do a manual swap for the 3K mark.

Well.. i could never afford a 460 anyway.... besides, they are what, 200kg (500lbs) heavier...and for me the 460 looks too 'modern'.... i only have 1 working hand so manual is no good (I hate auto's but I have no choice)... Ive done several engine transplants in my day and i find them a fun project... 'building' a car.... I love my '99 LS400... i love the way it drives and how it makes me feel when I drive it... However, being the motorhead that i am, I would love either more power or more gears.... 8 speed or supercharging.... Unsure how the stock A650E 5 speed would go behind a supercharged motor... The only thing that phases me about a 1UR-FSE 8 speed combo is the electronics... i know there are people around that specialize in that sort of thing but i know very little... I'm an analog man with analog gauges.... Anyway... i'll just keep my eye out for this engine combo... 1 just might turn up .....
PS.. Things like this are much more expensive here in Australia... A low mileage 460 is $30-45,000 ... probably $10k for motor with g/box...
