Default High idle in park or N

Hey guys. So my 91 celsior is idling at 800 in N and P and at 500 when in drive. When I go from P or N to drive it does clunk a bit as it shifts into gear.

While driving the shifts from 1-4th are very smooth, almost unnoticeable at gentle cruising. It downshifts great too.

I don't know about the exact idle speed, but I've also noticed the "clunk" going into D, as well as into R. I never thought much of it, it's not accompanied by any noises or grinding.

I am wondering if it is related to the idle being too high. Feels that way to me.

That's not a very high idle for a 26 year old car.

Your idle speed is normal - I read a spec and did some testing on my 1991 last year, which idles around 600-800 RPM when warmed up and/or in warm weather.

When you put the car into gear, the RPMs should go down naturally, and a slight clunking noise when going into gear is also normal. You can inspect your engine and transmission mounts to double check, but I doubt they are bad since you mentioned shifting when in gear is smooth.

the hard shifts into gear usually equate to a few things other than high idle (which you don't have unless the engine is cold). I would first check your engine and transmission mounts. that's usually toast at 100k or so. then check your guibo bushing on the drive shaft. search more on that one.

Cheers mate. the car has only done 95000 kms. so about 60 000 miles. But the mounts could still be gone so ill check them out also.
