Advice for pre-purchase inspection
Hey folks,
I'm looking to buy a 1999 ls400 from a private party today- this would be my first Lexus- switching from BMW for practicality.
Besides the standard checks and red flags, what kinds of issues should I be looking for? I.e. what common problems have you
known to come up most often? The car only has 135xxx so I'm hoping for an airtight setup, but I'd love to hear what y'all consider
warning signs or other bad news in that model.
Thanks for your time!

The infamous starter, since it is located under/behind the intake manifold. Ask them when that was replaced. And check to see if the power steering fluid is leaking down to the alternator.

Lexus Champion
Look at al maintenance and repair receipts.
If Lexus, then you know quality OEM parts were used.
Ask Lexus to Run VIN number through national database and print out repair history
If you know someone at a body shop, ask them to do same.
If Independent mechanic, then check brand parts used......if not shown, then must assume AutoZone.
Aftermarket timing belt components = 20k replacement imterval.
OEM = 90k
At 130k, all serpentine belt components are tired. Power steering pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, altermator (bearings and brushes), AC compressor clutch(bearing), fan bracket bearing , fan clutch...
Starter?
All rubber vacuum hoses.
If proactive, consider replacement.
Varios suspension components.
Check the forum for common issues.
You should anticipate $1,000-1,500 in parts.
Labor is another story
