Default P0440 code

Wanted to share my experience.
Got check engine yellow light - scanner showed code P0440, I replaced gas gap, didn't help. Then I found that PCV valve is very loose, grommet was very hard and brittle. While replacing PCV valve, of course I dropped old grommet inside of valve cover, had small heart attack, but fished it out
Cleared the code, topped the fuel and no check engine light, no pending codes!
Question - could PCV trigger that P0440 code?

I would say you might be lucky.
These are the possible reasons for the P0440 code:

Possible causes

  • Missing or loose fuel cap
  • Incorrect fuel filler cap used
  • Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
  • Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
  • EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
  • EVAP system hose leaking
  • Fuel tank leaking
As you notice the PCV is not listed and is not part of the fuel system. Though would not hurt to replace it. Your code may come back.
After you put a couple of fill ups in it let us know how it's doing.
