Default Inaccurate Fuel Gauge?

Hey guys. New here. Not much of a car guy but here goes.

Bought a 92 LS400 secondhand. Approx. 6300 miles. So the guy says that the fuel gauge is inaccurate around quarter tank so I should fill up around half tank if I dont want to be stuck somewhere.

I've tested the limits of this. And around quarter tank it starts sputtering like it wants to Die. And it actually stalled on me.

I suspect there's more in the tank because when I fill up I click at around 14 galls. And the most I've gotten out of a tank before it reaches the quarter mark is about 250 miles and thats with conservative driving (no high revving)

Any help is much appreciated !

you may have a defective fuel pump where the pump fails to feel the engine when it gets to quarter tank. either that or someone messed with the gauge cluster (my thinking bc having that low of a mileage is rare, and I suspect someone wasn't honest)!

if it was just the cluster it wouldn't be acting like its dying around quarter tank because the reading is just inaccurate tho right?

And yeah. Lots of truths came to light after I signed the paper lol.

well if it's just the cluster you shouldn't be getting 250 miles to a tank unless you are having other issues. I would ask the previous owner (if possible) if the fuel pump was ever serviced.
