Lightbulb Inside of a transmission oil filter

doing maintenance on my "new" 1998 ls400 with 130k miles... I don't know if the transmission oil filter was ever replaced but, judging by the dirty oil at the bottom of the pan, I really doubt it. So here is the inside of the filter after 130k...

PS. Considering an OEM filter (a.k.a STRAINER ASSY, OIL) is around 40-50 bucks, I wouldn't bother to replace the filter until 250k miles or so

Just make sure to use the correct fluid.

While you have pan off...suggest replacing solenoid wiring harness (contains transmission fluid temperature sensor) and the transmission filter/screen. It can be cleaned, but the 3 cork gaskets have taken a set and instead of purchasing 3 gaskets, buy entire filter assembly with gaskets for almost same price. USE OEM !

Use Toyota FIPG..iinstead of a gasket...it is pricey but less prone to leakage... (four mating surfaces with gasket, two with FIPG)

One or two of the solenoids have o-rings worth replacing...

Semi reviving an old thread, but what's the solenoid wiring harness? I doubt it's the tranny control solenoids themselves? Is there a thread with the part descriptions (so I can properly read up myself)?

And I was considering the FIPG black I was going to use for the No.2 Oil Pan on the tranny oil pan, but couldn't make a decision. I'll be putting in a new tranny filter anyhow (got the Beck/Arnley kit ready to go).

DO NOT use non-OEM transmission screen.

Return it and get the proper part.

Meanwhile, if you want info for transmission solenoid harness...with integral temperature sensor then feel free to contact Javier in Parts at McGrath Lexus Chicago.
Good luck to you.
