So what is the procedure to clean out that area on a gen 1, 90 to 92? Since the engine had a mouse nest in the valley and turning on the climate fan the smell is not too good, it likely has a problem that needs cleaning up.

short of taking the entire dash apart to clean, what I would do first is spray sanitizing disinfecting spray like Lysol down the wiper cowl where the intake is into the cabin, while running the fan at full blast with recirculating off. it could be mildew from moisture from the AC you are smelling.

Its too bad they didn't do a filter in the older cars, and made it some what easy to get to it.
