HELP - Car dies when put in ANY gear
#16
White smoke when cold is raw fuel, you have to have a huge coolant leak to steam a lot, and its normal for steam on cold days anyway.
My first diagnosis on the computer sight un seen is you have an ECU problem.

No offence to anyone but I wouldn't even think about a blown head gasket right now b/c it is very very rare to go bad in these cars. Also the white smoke could be from the Idle Control Valve on the power steering pump which is a well known problem on 90% of LSs.

Alright, so the car has had a few days of testing at the shop. (Note: I only have access to it about 2 and a half hours a day). Currently, on the rack, the car is not dying in gear like it did and no significant changes have been made. The throttle is giving us issues still, and the car is running rough. First thing we did was put a scan tool on it, and it's not running any codes. Then we just had it read us the information it's a sending to the ECU. At idle, everything seems normal, or mostly. When the car is throttled up, it's usually good up till a certain point. When we reach, or get close to, max throttle the ECU stops reading Throttle Input, and marks it down to 0. Of course that sounds like a throttle position sensor, but after further testing with a multi meter, it doesn't seem so. We followed the throttle position sensors electronic diagram and followed the wire labeled something like VT1, which should be the one responsible for reading the actual position of the throttle. Then we hooked a multi meter to it through the TPS connector, and were checking for a spike in OHms. When throttle increased, resistance dropped at a constant rate as it should. There were no spikes no matter how we throttle it up, slowly or straight to max. That was as far as I've got in testing up to today. Tomorrow we'll see if we can load test it, as obviously the car had to be off for us to test it the way we did. Also going to be checking fuel pressure and such for changes. I also want to take the car outside to see if i can force it to die in gear on me, like it was doing like a week and a half ago.
Side Note: I had it running without the MAF connected and it made no difference. But like I said, it's not dying like it was.

+1 for dicer and Banshe365.
A 93 is old enough for those Nichicon QAS capacitors to fail. If your ECU has original capacitors or incorrect capacitors simply replace them in accordance with the instruction which can be found here below.
