Default 99 LS400 Telescoping In and Out Problem

Hi Guys,

I did a search and only came up with definite remedies for the up/down steering wheel issue and in/out noise issue.

So, with mine the tilt up/down works perfect, but does not go in/out. It doesn't even make a sound. Do any of you know if I could just swap out a part and does anyone have a part number for it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my 98 does the opposite thing, goes in and out, but won't go up or down. Makes a noise like it's trying to move but something is preventing it from doing so. Actually is quite a pain for keeping the steering wheel straight when aligning the car.

I've read on these forums there is a simple fix to these as long as the motor is fine. Involves inserting an extra plastic piece somewhere IIRC? Maybe one of the experts can chime in, i'm sure this has been discussed many times. Billydpowe?

I'm not sure on the compatibility but, according to a Lexus parts system, the 1995-2000 share the same p/n for the steering column gear unit. With that said this gear should work for 1995-2000 LS400's.

I've done the washer deal, and it works. But I would rather go this route now that the gear is available separate in the aftermarket.

A 99 uses ultrasonic motors for the telescopic control. As far as I know, most of telescopic failures are caused by the ultrasonic motor itself and you have to replace it to fix. A minor change was done in July 1999 and the motor was changed from 89232-50040 to 89232-50041.

Do you know if a motor from a 2000 LS400 would work? 89232-50020. Thanks for all the help guys.

Billy I used the first thread to fix my 98, but since mine is an early production 98 I think they changed the design at some point in the 98 production year.

What was the part you replaced before? Do you have the part number and did it remedy the telescoping problem at the time?

my 00 quit going up and down. both use magnetic motors that turn a worm screw. I took some pliers and mechanicaly forced the tilt screw back adn forth. was just stuck, has been workign fine ever since.
So take your covrs off and try physically moving the worm gears first.
