Key issues
Hi all,
I have a 1991 Celsior that I've never been able to unlock with the remote, always have to put the key in the door. I've tried replacing the battery in the key, and I removed and reinserted the card in the box in the truck, and still nothing.
Also, the spare key will unlock the doors, but will not start the car. Someone suggested the "chip" in that key may need to be reset?
Any ideas?
Thanks!

There is a chip to generate a key code even in an early LS. I worry that it doesn't generate the code correctly or the modulated signal is not transmitted. You need a spectrum analyser or an equivalent and a code decoding equipment for the analysis. But this can't be done at most dealers. Some people like me do it.

My 1991 LS400, been in California since new, does not have immobilizer chips in the keys. It even has a 100% Aluminum (no plastic, no chip, no nothing other than pure Aluminum) wallet key that will work the doors, trunk, ignition, and start the car (not sure about glove box). This I know for sure, since it's just a data point for my own car. Celsior, Japanese market, etc., I do not know.
This Aluminum key does not work with the keyless entry of course. The other keys used to, then only one worked, then after that last working remote key was damaged, none work. They all still work in the doors, trunk, ignition, and to start the car.

I'm not 100% sure on the Aluminum wallet key - that may not fit the glove box or trunk release, but if it is different, it is only slightly (and I may be mis-remembering this for a different car).
If very different keys will work in your car, I would wonder if the lock cylinders have been modified. Will any other Lexus key work as well?
