we have no idea what variety of nissan leaf you drive...

Generally speaking unless it's the same car down to the sub generation it won't plug and play. ie- 89-92, 93-94, 95-97, and 98-00.

The cheaper plug n play is to get what ever year car you want a newer engine and trans in. Because in time and headaches you will spend way more than the newer car with the updated engine and transmission will cost. Plus you don't have to do tons of work to fit it wire it etc. And in the end if you want to sell it you could actually come out ahead. Where as the patch work quilt will be of no value to anyone else but you. Why? because when someone buys a car they would like to go to a parts place and say its for this year car. Patch work quilt cars its either a guessing game or an unknown, hey its bad enough having all stock and trying to get the right part.

Go with the same year, sub generation for your model. A VVTi into a 90-97 is going to be enough work that it is not PnP. If you enjoy running the harness go for it but then being in CA there is the smog check to pass.
