Default Slight whine when accelerating from stop?

I just noticed a barely audible whine these days, when accelerating from stop. The sound starts deep and raises the pitch quickly which leads me to believe that it is transmission related. Can't hear it at highway speed or any other time. I have no problems with transmission, but I have not changed AT fluid in about 20-25k miles.

The whine is barely noticeable, I can only hear it because I listen for any change in the way the car sounds. It sounds almost like a supercharger, only not so loud and I can only hear it for a second or two. It seems to be more pronounced when the car is cold, and I am not even sure if I can hear it every time... but I'd like to catch it before something goes terribly wrong.

I do have a different and louder, deeper whine at around 60mph from the differential. That I know what it is and I am living with it... but could this other whine also be from the diff?

Or could it be transmission? Would changing AT fluid help?

I have the same whining sound and I figure it is the transmission. I figured it could be the power steering pump as well. I changed the ATF fluid and still have the whining sound.

I also had the diff whining sound, but changed the diff fluid to 75w-140 full synthetic gear oil and the sound has stopped.

I drive a 1998 with the 5-speed auto tranny, btw

I have the same sound to. 97 with 184,000. Have not done and fluid maintenance since I bought it last August other than an oil change. Does not sound threatening though. Mine sounds like it's coming from the console area, had the A/C on however. Whatever it is probably resonating through vents. Mine is not deep but rather high pitched. Agreed on the power steering though....

Ah, the P/S pump - hoping that's probably it, because mine is leaking and from time to time is low on fluid, so I am just waiting for it to die and then I am rebuilding it.

Anyone ever heard strange whining noises from A/T?
