97 LS 400 No Start Issue
So I have been working on this for a while now and I have a job 6 hours away I have to travel to so I need to get this fixed asap. All help is appreciated.
Here is what has happened. On a 1.5 hour trip the car died halfway to my destination so I had it towed home. It didnt have a check engine light on till it lost all power. Once I got it home I started working through the No start checks. First I plugged my code reader in and it didnt send any codes, frustrating. Second I thought it might be the fuel pump so I check the fuses, relays and listened for the pump. All looked and sounded good. I took the fuel line apart and turned the key on and got fuel out of the line so the fuel has flow.
I then decided to check the air flow and pulled the filter and still no crank. So I went to ignition. I found this video (
) and did as instructed and I have spark at both distributors. So I pulled the ecm to check for blown capacitors. All the capacitors look fine. I saw on here to try starter fluid so I sprayed some in and tried firing it off and it caught and ran for a few seconds before dying(really really really rough). So now Im back at fuel.
I drained the fuel from the tank and I am purging the pump thinking maybe I got bad gas. I got called in and left my dang key on so my battery is dead and its charging while I write this plea for help. Can anyone give me some other ideas on what to check.

So then it didn't loose all power because the light came on ? You mean the engine died and the battery power was still there? Is the alternator putting out ? Are all battery connections good? Do those years have a fuel pump resistor? You may have cam or crank sensor problems. So you need to rule out the fuel deal with a pressure test. And your sure the timing belt is in good shape and didn't jump?

So to clarify the motor died but all the electronics and power where/are still on. I am not sure if the 97 has a fuel pump resistor. So I just hooked up the pressure gauge to the fuel line and I have good fuel pressure. ~44psi. Held above 35psi for 30 minutes.
If it is the timing belt would it still be able to crank with ether?

If t belt broke no it would self destruct, but a tooth or so yeah. You don't have a fuel problem or ignition.
You have a timing signal problem, crank or cam sensors or what is used to generate the pulse in them.
A good OBD2 scan tool would find the problem or Toyota software.

So I have it reduced down to my timing belt has slipped. I havent had a chance to test the pressure on each cylinder to make sure no damage was done when the belt slipped. The belt has 140k miles and I assumed it was changed around 90k because my uncle was always ontop of the maintenance but this wasnt the case. Once i verify all the cylinders are good and the motor isnt shot I am going to change out the belt.
