Default Dirty gas following storage

My son and I are working on bringing my old 91 LS back to life after it was left sitting for several years.

The trouble we keep having is clogged up fuel filters. When this first happened, the old filter was so rusted on that we ended up having to cut the fuel lines and replace the OE filter with a generic inline filter - a WIX 33032 (http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/Par...spx?Part=56820).

Fifty miles later, it was clogged again so we replaced it. Twenty miles later, it was clogged up again.

We are now thinking of just energizing the fuel pump using the connection accessible in the trunk following the plumbing in of a larger capacity/surface area filter like perhaps the 10 micron Goldrenrod version at Northern Tool (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too..._910812_910812). Under this plan, we would just build a circular loop from the tank to this temporary filter and then back to the tank.

Any other ideas?

With that much crap in the tank, you're going to have to remove the tank and flush it out.

with so much clogging going on, why not just dump the entire fuel from the tank and start fresh?! i would get a new(er) tank myself with a brand new fuel pump and filter.

I basically agree with the other guys, but did you cut open either of the clogged filters to see what you're up against here?

Even if the car seems to run OK with filtered bad gas, I would consider it not worth the risk to EVERYTHING the fuel touches (which is a lot).

the fuel is varnished and gone bad, ethanol fuel does that after 6mos-1year (faster than fuel without etOh).

You need to drain the tank, get some fresh fuel in it, an swap the filter again.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! We are going to pull the fuel pump today (gotta love easy access!) and assess how bad things are. From there, a new fuel pump is likely in order and perhaps a new tank as we've been discussing. Hopefully, it's not too bad.

For the new fuel pump, I see that Lextreme sourced a Walbro 155LTR/hr unit. Any thoughts on that or is the stocker the way to go?

there's no point in an upgraded pump for stock usage. Unless you plan on going high pressure turbo/supercharger or nitrous, it's money wasted.
