Default Corroded Waterpump - Green Anti-Freeze the Culprit??

I'm the second owner of a 92' LS400 with only 135k miles which I call "The Land Yacht" ... Was working on changing out the power steering pump & alternator last week and accidentally dropped a bolt into the timing belt cover which forced me to have to do a full timing belt maintenance job while fishing for the bolt yayyyyy

Just wanted to share with everyone the corroded picture of my water pump and ask for your thoughts on what could have caused this corrosion? Two things I'm thinking are 1) Car sat for a long period of time not started; 2) Green coolant

I completed the timing belt job with new water pump, flushed the cooling system, added Toyota pre-mixed pink coolant and she's as smooth as ever now!!

How long was it sitting? I know a lot of ppl will say its the green coolant which could very well be the culprit but if the car sat for extended periods of time that could add to the problem.

It was sitting around in an older couple's garage for a couple years and then they finally decided to part with it... It was so bad that I had to replace the fuel filter and fuel pump because she was hesitating bad with all of the gunk in her system.

It depends on what type of green coolant was used, the cheap stuff will do this, also if water was used or coolant was mixed with other colors.

The inside of the pump is just fine, there is no excessive corrosion. There is more corrosion on the outside parts.
Green coolant if it is prestone is good stuff and will not harm anything on an LS, or Aluminum parts. I have one LS that has had it for many years now and zero problems, I did that back when I didn't know much about the cars. It is preferred to use the correct Toyota stuff.
There are covers to prevent anything from dropping in around the timing belt????

On the dropped screws - I've been there too. But super long needle-nose pliers, magnetic pickup tools, patience and a lot of swearing all help on getting them out eventually.

On the "corrosion," to me, it actually looks like the seal failed at that location (gasket or not) and coolant was leaking out at that point. The stuff that looks like corrosion at that point is more likely debris or corrosion or stop-leak additive that collected there as the coolant leaked out. I.e., it is collected debris rather than corrosion at that spot. Since you've seen it in person, do you think that could be true?

Regarding the green vs. red coolant, I don't like to discriminate that way, so upon getting my car I phoned my local Lexus dealer (I know, not necessarily a fountain of knowledge, but ...) and even though they've got the $$$ red stuff on the shelf ready to sell to me, the guy said the green stuff was fine too. ... Which makes sense to me.

All 5 of my cars have Aluminum blocks and heads, and 4 of them have always run green coolant. The 5th one does not have any coolant.
