Question Speedo and Tach failure

Hi, I just got a 93 LS400 with 86000 miles on it and it's great ! But my speedometer and tachometer both started to work intermittently. All the other guages work fine and the tach and speedo still light up. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? Thanks.Paul

Angry Same problem with my93 LS400, no idea why?

I have similar problem. My 93 LS400 has 120,000+ miles. This has been going on for last 20,000 miles (1+ year).

Anyone, any idea?

Check out Lexusdash for some info on this problem. Looks like an expensive labour intensive job to get it fixed though

This is a common problem, if you do a search here on the board you will find many discussions. It is 1 of 2 problems. Either the ECU about $400 to fix or the instrument cluster is going out which cost about $1,700 to fix. What is bad about it is that it is hard to tell which one without replacing it so I would start with the cheaper fix the ECU but a majority of the times its the instrument cluster.

It usually takes some warming up for the needles begin to work? Or sometimes restarting the car will kick them on. What will happen is the other gauges will eventually start to go out... temp needle and then gas needle and then the lights will go on the entire cluster.

Default ECU?

Thanks for the info, but what is the ECU? My car for the last 14 yrs. has been a 74 datsun 260Z so I'm a little bit lost with this new stuff. Thanks. Paul

It's one of the few computers on the car.
