Hello fellow LS owners out there: I'm slowly replacing worn parts one by one on my LS400, and lo and behold, discovered a part I don't exactly know what it is called. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me identify it, so I could order a replacement.

I've attached a few photos of it to give you guys a clear view, so any ideas and opinions you might have, feel free to let me know.

Just to be clear, I'm not in question about the air intake pipe in the forefront of the picture, but the square box behind it. Lastly, what is the function of this square box? I'm all ears.

The square box is a quarter wave sound trap to reduce the noise generated at the intake line. Some people call it a resonator or a silencer though. See below and you will know more.

Yamae - thank you for the explanation on what the square box does. When I removed it to take pictures of, I noticed underneath it had "resonator" stamped on the underside of the piece.

OK, quick question for you. The hoses that connect to this box, one of the nozzles broke in half, so I think there is a vacuum leak of sorts. I haven't noticed any ill effects in driving my car, maybe a slight hesitation upon acceleration, but nothing major.

If this piece is removed or not functioning at 100%, other than the silencing effect, would this negatively affect my car in any way. I do not plan to remove it, but was just wondering.

Any input is appreciated.

The box is connected to the engine ports. The biggest opening is to the intake port but you can't see it and small ones to the crank case /valve cover. Your engine has been absorbing the unfiltered air and also emitting the blow-by gas depending on the engine cycle phase. You'd better fix it quickly.

usually you can glue it back on and it will work

Oh Yes. I used an aluminum pipe and some glue to fix it. It has been working well.

I know some about the car including behind the scenes because I was a bit involved.

Yamae - great write up on your blog for fixing the broken nozzle/nipple. I will give that a try and see how it works. On another note, great to see a fellow LS400 enthusiast from Japan. I actually grew up in Japan myself (Fukuoka), and often go back to see my parents who still live over there.

Aptos - thanks for the tip and also the thread you sent over. Oddly enough, I ended up buying a brass fitting at my local Ace Hardware (before seeing your post), and from the looks of it so far, I think it will do the job.

I continue to be impressed with the wealth of knowledge I have found on this board. Being a previous Saab owner, I found their forums to be very good, but have to say this forum has proven to be a great source of information . . . and fast too.
