This has been annoying me for the past week or 2. I can't find the thread pitch and size for the life of me!

My plan was to take this BVSV out because I don't have an EGR system in my car and replace it with a coolant temperature gauge probe. I've gone to Home Depot, Autozone, Ace Hardware, Pepboys, and Oreillys and I still can't find a brass bushing that has the same thread size. The closest I have found is a 3/8's but that is SLIGHTLY to small. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You may need to go to something like an industrial hydraulic supply place in your area. The threads are very likely metric pipe threads, don't use the wrong size.

it's an asian car so it will be metric threads! do not try and use standard pipe threads on this. are you trying to do an EGT probe? just trying to understand why you removed the EGR system?

I have a Nissan 240sx that I swapped a 1uzfe (ls400) engine into. When I purchased the engine the EGR parts were already removed, so instead of spending another $60 on a water temperature sensor adapter I'd rather just buy a "simple" brass bushing.

On that note I went to a Lexus Service Shop today and one of the mechanics confirmed that the thread pitch was 3/8-18 in. But you guys keep saying it should be metric since the engine is out of an import, which makes me rethink if that measurement is correct.

correct size for that fitting is 3/8 - 18 NPT (not UNF).

Do you have a working link for the sender you bought? IIRC most autometer water temp senders come with a 3/8" adapter. Otherwise, this should do it, I think: http://www.autozone.com/fasteners/st...ng/483628_0_0/

Sparing use of regular old white teflon tape is allowed on an NPT fitting of this size. Just make sure not to use too much such that it's in contact with the coolant.

Engine is out of a 1992 Lexus LS400.

Did come with a 3/8" adapter, but it didn't quite fit. It seems like all the hardware stores I went to had the 3/8" x 1/8" in. brass adapter, however the thread pitch wasn't the correct size. I would line up the 3/8" adapter threads that came with the temp gauge with hardware store's 3/8" adapter and they would line up perfectly. But when I tried lining up the BVSV threads with either of the adapters it wouldn't line up with its threads.

Maybe I should contact jegs and ask if the adapter is a 3/8-18 thread size.

This was the basically the only one I found that showed the thread size: 3/8-18" x 1/8-27"

Alright so I emailed Jegs about the thread size on the 3/8" brass fitting and they confirmed that the thread pitch is 3/8-18.

I went back to my car to double check if the 3/8" fitting I received will work.

I took a picture and video of my findings.

First, the thread difference between the Bimetallic Vacuum Switching Valve (BVSV) and the 3/8" fitting. You can see that they are noticeably different, but not by much.




I also took a video. The BVSV obviously fit a little smoother and I was able to get more threads into the hole as designed. I am doing this hand tight by the way.
I then tried the 3/8" fitting at first it goes in pretty smooth, but it then starts to tighten up a little. I then checked the threads and there was no damage. *Not shown in the video, but I used a wrench to tighten the fitting and it would go in but I am worried it would strip the threads inside the hole. Of course I would have to use Teflon Sealing Compound. What is your guys's opinion? Keep presuming the correct size or just try the 3/8" fitting?


Another quick question would I use the Teflon Sealing Compound only between the fitting and the engine threads or would I also use the Teflon Sealing Compound between the temperature probe and the fitting?

post the jegs part number. You didn't mention if you had them confirm if your adapter is UNF, NPT, or BPT/BPST.

They couldn't give me the part number for the adapter but they gave me a part number for the sender.
