tilt wheel stopped working 2000 ls400

So i read about how you can put a washer in behind the gear, but the 98-00 have different mechanism. Mine is stuck in the up position. Weird becuase it worked fine when i parked the car, did some bodywork, and now it doesn twant to go down. Just makes a squeek when you press the down button...So the motor isnt dead since I hear it but..what could it be and can i fix it on the cheap?

Greg5OH 05-23-14 05:53 AM

ah, i see there is no cheap easy fix, ill have ot take it apart at some point and see whats up. danging, righ tbefore a 400 mile trip! going to be uncomfortable

DRTYLUVN 05-23-14 08:28 AM

if you want a temprory fix you can do what i did
mines wouldnt go down consistantly so i took it apart and took the gear out
turned the shaft with a plier ( cant remember which way to go down )and set the height to my liking
then unplugged the actual connector

**its temp for now till i get some funds and find a new motor**
i tried the washer trick but my motor is shot, it comes out and goes in fine but wont go up/down consistantly

this will at least make driving more comfortable downside is if your tall/long legs its gonna suck to get out since the wheel wont tilt up

gotta sacrafice one for the other ahaha

Greg5OH 05-23-14 08:39 AM

what year is yours? apparently tjhe washer trick doesnt work for 99-00 as it has the newer design.
And yes getting in and out with it all the way down definitly sucks lol. but rather have it bad in/out than uncomfortable while doing a long drive.

DRTYLUVN 05-23-14 08:42 AM

mines is a 96
rather roll outta the car than drive 400 miles
**not tryin to be racial**

And yet..... Post edited, no racial slurs are tolerated at all. Only warning.

what did you do to fix it? photos? mine works ok but my wifes will only go down if I manually push the button down, in and out is ok. this motor was replaced 3 years ago (new) when I bought the car. the memory will not pull it down, works otherwise.

I just opened it up and cleaned out the old grease and put new MP grease in there. I put the washer in back of the wheel to push it out more so it could line up the gear. Here's the thread I used.

Pretty sure our 2000 is different than the one pictured. I don't think there is a easy fix.

rayplumas 07-11-14 11:37 AM

1999 LS400 is much different. My up and down kind of works, telescope is dead. The wheel goes up fine, starting it comes partway down, then I have to jiggle the switch a few times to get it to come all the way down. Could I have a switch problem??

Yes, Toyota has started to use ultrasonic motors in August 1998 to minimize the noise and the vibration. You can't use an old fixing method for the final version of models.
