Is there a way to replace the bushings in the front control arms without buying entire new control arms @ ~ $500?

In lower control arms - yes.

Bushings - and/or upper ball joints - in upper control arms to my knowledge are not changeable.

Upper and lower suspension control arms. Prices from web sellers.

$120-150 per aftermarket upper control arm which includes bushings and UBJs
you can find LCA bushing and strut rod bushings for under $200 from various sources...

So yes you can replace the bushings and everything without having to pay ~$500/arm
